Sony Xperia J review: Affordable mid-range Android
Known to have delivered decent mid-range Android smartphones at affordable prices, Sony is trying to do the same by launching the Xperia J, the latest device of this kind to join the line-up. The Xperia J takes its pride in a large 4-inch display and a promising battery among other features such as a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera, and a VGA front-facing one. But let’s see if this is enough to make the J a competitive offering in the mid-range battlefield.
What is in the box:
- The Xperia J smartphone
- Wall charger
- microUSB cable
- Wired stereo headset
- Micro-SIM card adapter
- Quick start guide
Not surprisingly for a smartphone in this category, plastic is the predominant material Sony makes use of. The front side looks rather boring, but its nice curved back side manages to compensate making the handset stand out. The battery cover has a matte finish, being very resistant to fingerprints and providing users good.
The Sony Xperia J features a pair of notification lights, one of them being located next to the earpiece to indicate when the smartphone is charging, while the other one, the RGB kind, is at the bottom showing different colors for different kinds of notification such as new text, a new Facebook message, or a “Low battery” warning.
The 4-inch 480 by 854 pixel LCD display found on the Xperia J is actually one of the phone’s main attraction points, offering a decent 245 pixels per inch density with good amount of detail, nice color representation, wide viewing angles, as well as enough brightness to be usable in broad daylight. However, there is no ambient light sensor, which means you will have to adjust the brightness yourself.
The three capacitive buttons are underneath the display and show enough responsiveness, unlike the physical keys which can be annoying. On the right side you will find a tiny volume rocker and a lock key which fail to provide sufficient feedback when pressed.
The back of the Xperia J sports the 5-megapixels camera lens and the LED flash. Under the back cover we have the 1750 mAh battery, the microSD slot and the SIM compartment.
