T-Mobile’s site for the first Android phone is now up and running but with limited functionality. With less than twelve hours before T-Mobile officially pulls back the curtain on the ultra-hyped Android, the doors have opened and images with specs about T-Mobile’s G1 phone started to leak.
The new phone, called the G1 according to T-Mobile, is widely expected to be designed by HTC Corp. of Taiwan, which has made a name for itself by making smart phones that use Windows Mobile software. Based on previous Google demos of its software, it's assumed that the phone will sport a touch screen and a slide-out, full-alphabet keyboard.
But here are the specs we have managed to gather for you, so far: size 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 inches, weighs 5.6 ounces, features a 480 x 320 HVGA display, sports 3G, GPS, has a 3.1 megapixels camera, supports up to 8GB of memory and will feature 5 hours of talk-time with 130 hours of standby.
Unfortunately, the phone will not have video recording capabilities, will not support stereo Bluetooth and will only be available in stores within 5 miles of T-Mobile's 3G covered area.
Among other U.S. carriers, Sprint Nextel Corp. has also shown their interest towards the device. Verizon Wireless has not ruled out Android phones while AT&T is still holding off on making any decisions about the handset.
Update:
The T-Mobile G1 is now official and available for pre-orders through the dedicated T-Mobile website. The device will start shipping in US stores as of 22nd October and will be selling for $179 with a two-year voice and data contract.
The handset will also be available in the UK beginning in November, and across T-Mobile's European markets in Q1 2009. The European price tag is not yet known.
